Bad/worst solutions are having the most children

Hi, I would appreciate advice on how to set the OpenEvolve Config. I can see that the best solutions are having few children while some really bad solutions are having many.

I'm using the following config.

Also some "bad programs having children" is actually by design in evolutionary algorithms:

• Exploration (30% in config) = random selection to avoid local optima
• MAP-Elites deliberately maintains diverse programs across feature space
• Early/root programs naturally have more descendants in the tree visualization

Where does the extra .1 go in your config? .1+ .8 =0.9

The remaining 0.1 (10%) goes to fitness-weighted sampling.

Looking at the code logic in database.py:419-430:

So with 0.1 + 0.8 = 0.9:

• 10% → Random from island (exploration)
• 80% → From archive/elite programs (exploitation)
• 10% → Fitness-weighted sampling from island (the remainder)

The fitness-weighted mode uses _sample_from_island_weighted() which calculates selection probability proportional to each program's fitness score - so higher-scoring programs are more likely to be selected, but not exclusively.

All three modes favor good programs to varying degrees:

• Exploitation (80%): Strongest bias - only elite archive programs
• Weighted (10%): Moderate bias - probabilistic based on fitness
• Exploration (10%): No bias - pure random for diversity
